El Minsa le otorga reconocimiento oficial al Zoo de Buenaventura
The MINSA has officially recognized the Buenaventura Zoo.

This story began 30 years ago when Mrs. Adriana de Vallarino built a farm “with chickens and roosters so they could have fresh eggs,” she recalled. Then, during the winters, a small lagoon formed where ducks and Wichi Chi arrived.

The vision was always to care for the animals that arrived, such as the chicks brought to the farm, because their mothers wouldn’t let children take them home after fairs. Over time, snakes appeared while clearing the land where Buenaventura is located today.

“Once a friend told me they were not poisonous, we began caring for constrictors like boas. Then, alligators appeared in the lake, followed by turtles, and we decided to build another enclosure with a small pool so they could swim,” said Mrs. Adriana.

The project has been growing, with advice and suggestions from the respective authorities. First from Anam and now from MiAmbiente. A master plan has been developing and expanding, with animals donated by people who can no longer provide proper care or maintenance.

Today, the Zoo has eleven employees, two permanent veterinarians, and a group of temporary staff who support operations, along with veterinary students completing their studies and writing theses. Others come to fulfill their social service obligations.

In 2023, the Buenaventura Zoo achieved a significant milestone by obtaining Resolution DAPB-351-2023 from MiAmbiente, officially recognizing it as the Coclé Fauna Conservation Center Foundation – Buenaventura Zoo. This recognition marks a new phase in the zoo’s history, solidifying its position as a conservation center dedicated to protecting native fauna and promoting environmental education.

The Buenaventura Zoo will continue to evolve with a mission to protect and care for the environment while promoting biodiversity knowledge. Its vision is to become a leader in conservation and education about native fauna, encouraging the community to participate in preserving endangered species.
